A site-specific installation created for Mono no Aware at Saint Laurent Rive Droite, Ryoanji reinterprets the celebrated karesansui garden of Ryoanji Temple in Kyoto through material transformation and abstraction.
Fifteen charred redwood cubes, made using shou sugi ban, translate the garden’s fifteen stones into geometric forms. Silver nitrate-treated surfaces reflect and dissolve into the surrounding space, while a 120 × 120 inch ink painting on aluminum gathers and diffuses ambient light.
The installation extends Ando’s ongoing Ryoanji series, begun at Asia Society Texas in 2019 and continued at MAKI Gallery Tokyo in 2021. Through stone, wood, light, reflection, and absence, the work considers impermanence and shifting perception.
