This pre-Gregorian early modern Japanese calendar, known as the 72 Pentads Calendar (Shichijuni Kō), describes 72 micro-seasons defined by local phenological events and observations of the natural world. The 72 seasons or Japanese (Kō) Pentads calendar 七十二候 is an adaptation of an older, 24 season Chinese Solar Terms (Nijūshi Sekki) 二十四節気 calendar, which originated in the Chinese Yellow River basin circa 2,500 years ago. The Solar Terms calendar is based upon the sun’s ecliptic orbit; every 15 degrees (which, in turn, corresponds to 15 days) signifies a new season in this system. The pentads calendar is derived from the solar terms calendar being further into 72 pentads, three pentads per solar term at approximately 5 days per season. Several hundred years ago the pentads calendar was customized to the Japanese climate and terrain.- Miya Ando
